How To Get Rid of Movie Theaters Mold And Odors Problems?

Air Movie Theater

Case description

The customer owns a chain of movie theaters in Peru. Their problem is humidity in the soil quality, so that mold problem and bad odors in HVAC system to make the theaters smells.

In the humid climate of the country, the HVAC system of cinemas is prone to accumulating moisture, becoming a breeding ground for fungi and mold. When the system is running, these pollutants will circulate throughout the entire theater with the airflow, which not only damages the equipment itself, but also leads to deterioration of the air quality in the theater, diffuse odors, seriously affecting the audience experience, and even posing a serious threat to the health of respiratory disease patients.

What are the specific issues in the application of HVAC systems in movie theater?

Air Issue Of Movie Theater

Dust and allergens: When filters aren’t changed regularly, fine dust particles build up in the air, which can trigger breathing problems and allergies.

Stuffy air: Without enough fresh air, CO₂ levels rise quickly in a full theater. This can make people feel tired, dizzy, and unable to focus.

Chemical fumes: Harmful gases from cleaning products, seats, and carpets—like formaldehyde—can get trapped inside. These may cause headaches and pose long-term health risks with continued exposure.

Germ spread: The moist, dark inside of AC units is perfect for growing mold and bacteria. If the system recirculates this dirty air, it can spread viruses and other pathogens around the whole theater.

How can we ensure cinemas have fresh, comfortable air by fixing the HVAC system?

According to customer requirements, we have developed a set of deodorization and sterilization equipment that integrates ozone and ion technology. This device is suitable for spaces with a scale of approximately 3000-5000 cubic meters (corresponding to an area of 500-600 square meters) and adopts a three-stage purification process:

Pre ozone treatment: with a dosage of 2-5 ppm, it efficiently decomposes odor molecules and kills microorganisms.

Post ion purification: using the synergistic effect of high-energy ions and negative ions, the ion concentration range is 20000-200000/cm ³ (as a reference, the negative ion concentration in forest environments is usually 10000-20000/cm ³).

The equipment system consists of three core units: ozone generator, bipolar ion generator, and negative ion generator. It supports floor mounted installation or integration into existing HVAC systems, and can flexibly adapt to different site conditions.

Hvac System Ozone

The ozone-based air purification system is integrated into your HVAC system via a centrifugal fan and operates in a three-stage process:

1. Ozone Treatment

The ozone generator activates after the HVAC system starts, producing ozone from oxygen in the air through high-voltage discharge. This stage runs only when the space is unoccupied, typically for 1–2 hours. It effectively breaks down harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene, and stubborn odors from smoke or building materials.

2. Bipolar Ion Purification

Once the ozone phase is complete, the high-energy ionizer takes over. It can run safely even when people are present, usually for 30–60 minutes. Using an electric field, it releases charged ions that quickly break down unpleasant gases—such as those causing sulfur or ammonia smells—converting them into harmless water and carbon dioxide.

3. Negative Ion Refresh

The negative ion generator can be turned on anytime to enhance air freshness. Research shows negative ion levels directly impact how people feel:

Below 20 ions/cm³: may cause tiredness or stuffiness

1,000–10,000 ions/cm³: promotes calmness and easy breathing

Above 10,000 ions/cm³: helps increase alertness, reduce fatigue, and creates a naturally energizing atmosphere similar to a forest environment.

The main ion components of ozone purification equipment

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)

Ozone (O3): Generated by high-pressure ionization of oxygen, it has strong oxidizing properties and is used to decompose organic matter and kill bacteria.

Hydroxyl radicals (· OH): Produced by ionization of water molecules, they can rapidly degrade odor molecules and viruses. ‌

Nitrogen oxides (NOx): generated during air ionization and participate in pollutant decomposition reactions.

Other charged particles

Including electrons (e ⁻), positive and negative ions (such as O ₂ ⁻, N ⁺), etc., they are formed through non-equilibrium ionization to maintain plasma activity.

Ozone Air Purification for HVAC Systems: Key Benefits

Eliminates Germs & Viruses

Ozone molecules actively target and break down bacteria and viruses (including H1N1), reducing spread with 99.99% effectiveness. Works well in enclosed spaces like theaters and lobbies, especially when crowded.

Removes Odors & Keeps Air Fresh

Breaks down tough smells from smoke, food, and more. Auto-adjusts output based on room usage to maintain a clean environment.

Easy to Integrate & Runs Anywhere

Fits right into your existing HVAC or air handling systems. Works reliably in hot or humid conditions.

Cost-Effective & Safe

Long-lasting (50,000–80,000 hours), low maintenance, and no filters needed. No chemicals or harmful by-products — safe for occupied spaces.
