Ozone for Disinfecting Hydroponic Nutrient Solutions

3.2

Hydroponic vegetables grow quickly and have high market quality, making this method popular for leafy green production. However, recirculating nutrient solutions can spread plant pathogens. In warm, humid conditions, these microbes multiply rapidly, damage roots, and may cause large crop losses. Disinfecting the nutrient solution is essential to keep plants healthy.

Ozone sterilization is a physical process. It works as a strong oxidizer that kills microorganisms and breaks down organic matter when used at the right concentration and contact time. It is effective, easy to use, and leaves no harmful residues.

3.3

Ozone (O₃) is made of three oxygen atoms. It is unstable, has a distinct smell, and dissolves easily in water. It breaks down quickly, but during that time it acts as a powerful oxidizer—second only to fluorine—that kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It also removes odors, colors, and organic contaminants such as ethylene and ethanol.

If not disinfected, recirculated nutrient solutions can spread root diseases to healthy plants and damage the entire growing system. Studies show ozone is effective—for example, at 20°C, a concentration of 0.43 mg/L is enough to eliminate E. coli completely.

The safety of ozone-treated nutrient solution depends on residual ozone levels. High concentrations can harm roots. In one study, exposing cucumber seedlings to 0.54–0.72 mg/L ozone for 30 minutes caused root damage. For this reason, treated solution should not be used immediately—residual ozone must drop to a safe level first.

Crops vary in ozone tolerance. Lettuce grown with intermittent ozone aeration (1:1 on/off cycle) showed no root damage and yielded 36.8% more than untreated plants. Tomato seedlings were not harmed by 1.5 mg/L ozone.

Practical Recommendations

Ozone is efficient, clean, and easy to use. To use it safely, control the aeration time and concentration carefully. Proper ozone treatment protects plants while enabling nutrient solution reuse.
